The path to natural brine
If there is a constant supply of water, the salt inside a cavern will gradually be leached from the rock. The salt water mixture which results is known as brine. By means of pipelines, the brine flows from where it is extracted to the saltworks in Ebensee in Upper Austria.
The pipeline from Hallstatt to Bad Ischl has existed for over 400 years, making it the oldest pipeline in the world. There is also a very idyllic pathway, known as the “Soleleitungsweg”, which follows the pipeline from Hallstatt to Ebensee.
Bakeries like to make use of regional ingredients, including the pure natural brine from Altaussee.
