What do you need to look out for when buying pool salt?

Make absolutely sure that your product complies with the EN 16401 standard and the Biocide Regulation BPR EU 528/2012. You ensure that your pool salt meets the purity, transport, storage and labelling criteria.

How salt water electrolysis works

The electrolysis cell uses salt as a raw material and produces chlorine from it:

Salt is chemically known as sodium chloride (NaCl) and is made up of the two elements sodium and chlorine.

Why vacuum salt

When you get right down to it, POOLSALZ vacuum salt actually comes from the sea, namely from the primeval sea, which dried up 250 million years ago. It left us a salt dome that was enclosed by rocks due to the folding of the Alps.

What do I need to consider when choosing the salt?

Be sure to observe the following standard and regulation, which must be labelled on the packaging: EN 16401 and BPR EU 528/2012.

The standard regulates that your pool salt meets the purity, transport, storage and labelling criteria. In addition, salt that is used in biocidal processes, such as the disinfection of swimming pool water, falls under the EU Biocidal Products Regulation. This ensures that the production and making available on the market of active substances and biocidal products have no harmful effects on human or animal health and no unacceptable effects on the environment.

Why is POOLSALZ evaporated salt enough to clean my pool?

POOLSALZ evaporated salt is salt in the highest concentration: when boiling the salt solution that we extract in the mountain, we filter out other substances such as rock residues. What remains is the purest salt with a concentration of 99.9 %. Nothing else needs to be so highly concentrated to develop its natural cleaning power in salt electrolysis. This makes POOLSALZ evaporated salt highly effective and efficient at the same time: effective and economical.

Is POOLSALZ evaporated salt ecological?

POOLSALZ evaporated salt is 100 % biodegradable. The high sodium chloride content of 99.9 % dissolves completely without leaving any residue. The ‘used’ chlorine turns back into salt within a few hours. A natural cycle that does not pollute your body, the water or the environment.

We would also like to mention at this point that the film of POOLSALZ vacuum salt consists of at least 45 % recycled material.

What standards does POOLSALZ vacuum salt comply with?

POOLSALZ vacuum salt complies with the applicable standards for pool water treatment: EN 16401:2013 Quality A and the Biocide Regulation (EU) No 528/2012, as well as EN 16401:2013 Quality A, EN 14805:2022 Type 1, EN 16370:2022 and EN 973:2009 Type A. This means that POOLSALZ evaporated salt can be used not only in the private sector, but also in the commercial sector.

How high are the running costs compared to other forms of cleaning?

POOLSALZ evaporated salt is cheaper than other water care methods:

  • It is cheaper and more efficient to use.
  • You do not need to use any other chemical additives, which are unnecessary due to the high degree of purity of POOLSALZ vacuum salt.
  • This saves time and costs during operation.
  • And last but not least, nerves when it comes to checking measurements and standard values.
How much POOLSALZ vacuum salt does my pool need?

Please refer to the description of your salt water electrolysis cell: Here you will find the exact quantities specified by your manufacturer. The required salt concentration is usually between 0.3 and 0.5 %. Our experience:

In a normal pool season, you will need to add salt about twice to keep the salt content as close as possible to the required concentration specified by the manufacturer.

How much POOLSALZ evaporated salt do I need to calculate at the start of the pool season?

The same salt calculation applies for the spring as for the current pool season: this means that you only need to add as much salt as you add new water to your pool to restore the necessary salt content. This also means that you can continue to use the water from the previous year.

Which pool chemicals do I need in addition to POOLSALZ vacuum salt?

The good news: With the optimum setting - none!

This is because the brine acts as a disinfectant and keeps the water clean.

The addition of chlorine normally causes the pH value and the overall alkalinity to fluctuate. However, as it is automatically and evenly released into the water during salt water electrolysis, these values also remain stable. This makes it much easier for you to manage the water quality.

Check regularly for the optimum setting:

  • Calcium hardness
  • pH value (with pH test strips)
  • Total alkalinity
What do I need to be aware of when handling POOLSALZ evaporated salt during salt electrolysis?

High-quality pool salt extends the life of your salt water electrolysis cell.

Salt water electrolysis is fully automated and requires little maintenance. Be sure to pay attention to the quality of the salt, as the systems are sensitive to impurities that occur in salts with a lower NaCl content.

A high-quality salt product made from evaporated salt is therefore highly recommended! A high concentration of sodium chloride in the salt increases the sterilising power, the filter does not have to run as long - and the service life of your salt electrolytic cell is positively influenced.

What do I need to be aware of when handling POOLSALZ evaporated salt?

Unlike other pool care products, salt is harmless:

We recommend storing the POOLSALZ bag dry and tightly closed! You do not need to observe any further regulations when storing POOLSALZ vacuum salt. Chlorine products, on the other hand, are labelled with safety data sheets and are declared as special transport.

What should I look out for when buying pool salt?

Only the best pool salts are officially tested and standardised.

Be sure to pay attention to the following standards, which the respective manufacturer must label on the packaging: Standard EN 16401 and the Biocide Regulation (EU) No 528/2012

This ensures that your pool salt meets the specified purity, transport, storage and labelling criteria.

Why is salt water healthier?

Salt has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and demonstrably positive effects on the skin and hair.

Does salt water in the pool irritate the eyes?

The slightly salty water in the pool does not irritate the eyes:

The salt concentration in the pool is between 0.3 and 0.4 %. Seawater, on the other hand, has a salt content ten times higher - around 3.5 % - and therefore also irritates our eyes. The salt water in the pool, however, corresponds exactly to the salt content of our tear fluid and is therefore gentle on our eyes when swimming, playing, splashing and diving.

Will the salt water in my pool cause corrosion?

The low salt concentration does not corrode any more than chlorinated water. The metal parts of the pumps or other materials do not react to the slightly salty water. But please replace your stainless steel heat exchangers with titanium ones!

Is sea salt better than evaporated salt?

When you get right down to it, POOLSALZ vacuum salt also comes from the sea, namely from the primeval sea, which dried up 250 million years ago. It left us a salt dome that was enclosed by rocks as a result of the folding of the Alps.

  • Evaporated salt has never been exposed to harmful environmental influences and is completely uncontaminated.
  • Evaporated salt is the purest salt with a content of 99.9 % NaCl, which is set: The consistent quality with a low proportion of secondary salts guarantees very rapid and residue-free solubility.
  • The high purity contributes significantly to the service life of your salt electrolysis cell.
Can I also use POOLSALZ vacuum salt for a brine bath in the bathtub at home?

Our fine-grained POOSALZ evaporated salt has no additives and dissolves very quickly without leaving any residue. It is therefore also suitable as a bath salt for brine baths in the bath.
