Natural salt, also known in these parts as “Ausseer Bergkern”, is still mined at the Altaussee salt mine using traditional methods. This is the site of the only natural rock salt deposits in all of Austria.
After the natural salt has been quarried out of the mountain, it is preselected, crushed and milled right there in mine. Even today, mining for rock salt is hard physical labor, making natural salt a very special, hand-produced and hand-selected product.
