Chlorine is a crucial component in many types of plastics. It also serves as an auxiliary substance and reaction partner in the manufacturing of paints, coatings, plant protection products, and pharmaceuticals.

Additionally, chlorine is widely used for water treatment and disinfection, ensuring clean and safe water.

Sodium chloride is a key raw material in the production of magnesium sulfate, which is commonly used in laundry detergents due to its fiber-friendly properties and neutral impact on wastewater.

Additionally, magnesium sulfate helps regulate the viscosity of liquid soaps, detergents, and dishwashing liquids, ensuring optimal consistency and performance.

Salt is used to preserve animal hides. If hides are not processed immediately after removal, they must be preserved and stored properly. Rapid salting after slaughter prevents bacterial growth and halts decomposition, ensuring the hides remain intact.

This method not only preserves the hides but also makes them suitable for long-distance transportation without deterioration.

The earliest evidence of man-made glass dates back to the 4th millennium BC in the Middle East. By the 2nd millennium BC, independent glass production had begun in Mycenae, Egypt, China, and North Tyrol. The first recorded glass recipe, found in the Assyrian King Ashurbanipal’s clay tablet library (circa 650 BC), states:
"Take 60 parts sand, 180 parts ash from sea plants, 5 parts chalk – and you will get glass."

Even today, glass is made from a mixture of quartz sand, limestone (calcium carbonate), soda, and potash (potassium carbonate, historically derived from ash). These natural substances are also found in obsidian, a natural volcanic glass.

In modern glass production, soda and potassium oxide from potash help lower the high melting point of quartz (around 1,500°C). Additional materials like feldspar, limestone, and dolomite are used to enhance the stability and durability of the glass, depending on its intended use.
